other places – brian rihlmann

some nights now I roam the web
and get caught up
dreaming of other places
better places
different people
but I am too old to really believe this
anymore

I know it will be the same
no matter where I go
still, I indulge myself
I erase time like some false equation
scrawled madly across a chalkboard
I shrink myself to a mere eyeball
and roll through city after city
a ghost untraceable
haunting the streets and alleyways
of San Francisco or New Orleans
or Colorado Springs

I see the people standing on the sidewalks
alone or in groups, alone
just waiting
like they do here and everywhere
waiting and dreaming of other places
better places
different people
waiting and dreaming
and dreaming and waiting
until they—
until we…
have forgotten our dreams
or just what it was
we were waiting for
