luis cuauhtémoc berriozábal, two poems

going out tonight

I am going out tonight
all by myself. I am good
company on most days if
my mood is calm. If I am
feeling anxious, I tend to
eat too fast and I do not
enjoy or savor my meal.
I do not engage in small
talk and tend not to make eye
contact. If I am calm, I
take my time eating. I joke
with the waitress, waiter, or
cashier. I smile and give
a nice tip. I am going
out tonight and I am not
feeling anxious at all.
I think I will splurge and get
a glass of wine with my meal.

asian rum

Tanduay in October,
a rusty machete in the corner,
art displays on the wall,
guitars and drums, that is all.
No one is going to call
the fuzz on this block.

Tanduay and Coke Zero.
Got to watch the calories, you know.
In the warm October night,
everything is going to be alright.
No one is going to say
no to a little Rock…

Asian rum
Bang the drum
Fast and slow
Slow and fast

Tanduay in October,
a rusty machete in the corner.
Art displays on the wall,
guitars and drums, that is all.
No one is going to call
the fuzz on this block.

Asian rum
bang the drum.
Fast and slow
Slow and fast
